Parent Consultation and Coaching

Parent consultation and coaching, which includes Parent Management Therapy (PMT), is a supportive and evidence-based approach that focuses on equipping parents with the skills and strategies they need to effectively manage their child's behavior, strengthen parent-child relationships, and create a positive family environment. It provides parents with tools and guidance to address a wide range of behavior challenges from early childhood through adolescence.

Who Might Benefit from Parent Consultation?

Parent Management Therapy (PMT) is grounded in extensive research, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving parent-child relationships, reducing behavior problems in youth, and supporting kids and families in a variety of ways. We are here to support you on your parenting journey towards success. These sessions do not require your child to be present, so they can even take place virtually during your lunch break if you are pressed for time!

Parent consultation, coaching and PMT is valuable for families experiencing a variety of common situations and challenges, including:

  1. Common Behavioral Challenges: For parents of young children, PMT can help address common early childhood behavior challenges such as temper tantrums, defiance, and difficulties with bedtime, toilet training, or other daily routines by equipping parents with effective behavior management techniques and strategies. It can be very helpful in establishing smooth daily routines, easing transitions, coping with unexpected change, building emotion-regulation skills, increasing compliance, and enhancing the parent child relationship. Bedtime and mealtime struggles, separation anxiety, toilet training, tantrums, aggression are just a few of the real life situations that benefit from these services. For parents of older children, PMT can help you navigate issues related to defiance, disrespect, and rule-breaking behaviors.

  2. Social-Emotional Support: Parents can learn new tools to foster healthy social and emotional development in young children, including teaching ways to manage big feelings, empathy, effective communication, and conflict resolution skills, which lay a strong foundation for a child’s future relationships and well-being. This can be an effective approach for parents who want to help their children navigate mild anxiety, grief, or sadness.

  3. Academic, Organizational, Executive Functioning Support: For parents of school-age children, PMT can assist parents in supporting their kids with issues like homework resistance, organizational difficulties, and time management, ultimately improving their academic performance and success.

  4. Social Support: Parents can learn new ways to guide their child in building positive peer relationships, managing peer pressure, and developing effective social skills, promoting healthy friendships and self-esteem during formative years. For parents of teens, PMT can help parents navigate common teenage challenges such as social media use, rebellious behavior, substance use, and risk-taking by providing strategies to set boundaries, establish consequences, and maintain open communication.

  5. Foster Independence and Responsibility: Parents can learn how to support their teenagers in developing independence and responsibility, including managing chores, budgeting, and making informed decisions, as they prepare for adulthood and greater autonomy.

  6. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): PMT  can be an essential component of treatment for children with ADHD, helping parents implement effective behavior management strategies.

  7. Parenting Stress: PMT equips parents with the skills to reduce parenting stress and increase their confidence in managing their child's behavior. Parents report increased confidence and less stress when facing sibling conflict, non-compliance, aggression, perfectionistic tendencies, video games and social media issues, and boundary pushing.
