Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT)

Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) is a specialized therapeutic approach designed for individuals who have difficulty with overcontrol. Overcontrol refers to behaviors like excessive self-discipline, perfectionism, emotional suppression, and hyper-detail focus that can make it hard for people to adapt to change, build close relationships, or experience joy and spontaneity. RO-DBT offers tools and techniques to help individuals open up emotionally, connect with others, and engage in a more flexible way of living.

What is RO-DBT?

RO-DBT is an adaptation of traditional Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), but it focuses on helping those who struggle with being overly controlled in their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Rather than addressing emotional impulsivity (as DBT often does), RO-DBT is for individuals who are too rigid or inhibited.

Who Might Benefit from RO-DBT?

RO-DBT is helpful for people who tend to be over-controlled. Individuals who often struggle with perfectionism, social isolation, or feelings of loneliness despite their efforts to be "perfect" or "good enough" may benefit from this therapy. It’s also useful for those who are highly rule-bound, and who may avoid risk or spontaneity in an attempt to maintain control.

Conditions RO-DBT Addresses

RO-DBT has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of conditions where overcontrol is a core issue, including:

  • Chronic Depression

  • Anorexia Nervosa and other eating disorders

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD)

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (especially with rigidity in social and emotional expression)

  • Anxiety Disorders (when driven by rigid or perfectionistic behaviors)

RO-DBT for Kids

RO-DBT can be adapted for younger populations as well. Children and teens with a tendency towards perfectionism, rigid thinking, or social difficulties can benefit from RO-DBT's focus on flexibility and emotional openness. When used developmentally, the therapy involves creative activities, age-appropriate mindfulness practices, and playful strategies to help kids learn how to express themselves more freely and connect better with peers.

The Research Behind RO-DBT

RO-DBT is grounded in over 20 years of research, led by Dr. Thomas Lynch, the founder of this approach. Studies have shown that it is particularly effective in treating chronic, treatment-resistant depression, and eating disorders characterized by high self-control. The approach is supported by clinical trials that demonstrate its effectiveness in improving social connectedness, emotional regulation, and overall quality of life.
